Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, USA
Over the Golden Gate
They didn't name it the Golden Gate Bridge for its colour (which isn't gold but specially formulated International Orange). More than a kilometre long and supported by twin 227-metre towers, the bridge gets its name from where it spans San Francisco Bay: the Golden Gate. This narrow point at the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula separates the bay side of town, with areas such as Fisherman's Wharf and the Embarcadero, from the Pacific Ocean side, with further-flung destinations like Lands End and Ocean Beach.
This landmark splits a great city into two sides, bay and Pacific, but also unites it with the lovely Marin County.
