Ilulissat Icefjord, Disko Bay, Greenland
Sailing with icebergs
Welcome to the magical Ilulissat Icefjord, where a fast-moving glacier meets the open ocean and fragments into a maze of floating icebergs. As the unfortunate Titanic taught us, bergs like this can be a big ship's bane, but this little red sailboat has no trouble flitting among the cool-blue goliaths. Speaking of that stunning contrast of colours, we owe the vividness of this night shot to the midnight sun – this spot on Greenland's west coast is just above the Arctic Circle, so during summer it stays illuminated all night long.
During an Arctic Circle summer, bright-coloured shots like this are possible well into the night.
