Ama Dablam peak, Nepal
6,812 metres high and rising
With its steep, sharp summit, Ama Dablam has been called the "Matterhorn of the Himalayas". But in terms of height, the Alpine icon hardly rivals it. Ama Dablam is over than 2,000 metres higher. Here in the world's tallest mountain range, however, it's barely a contender at 6,812 metres as more than 100 of its neighbours rise well past the 7,000-metre mark—and they're not even fully grown yet. Due to gradual activity in the faults that formed them, the Himalayas rise in elevation almost three centimetres a year.
Though, geologically speaking, this mountain range is one of the youngest in the world, it's by far the tallest.
