Blackfriars Bridge in central London, United Kingdom
Arches of iron
The 18th-century bridge that spanned the River Thames in this central London spot was named Blackfriars Bridge after a nearby monastery that wielded great wealth and power in the Middle Ages. Later, at the height of Britain's global dominance in 1869, this rebuilt version was opened in a ceremony led by Queen Victoria. With five arches wrought from near-invincible iron, the "new" Blackfriars Bridge has survived two world wars and the fall of the largest empire in world history. In short, we bet this London bridge won't be falling down any time soon.
London has seen some tough times in the last century and a half, but this iron bridge has stood sturdily through it all.
