Seven Coloured Earths, Mauritius
Rolling rainbows
Billowing like a tie-dyed blanket, the dune patch known as the Seven Coloured Earths adds a rainbow dusting to this already-colourful island nation. The sands are said to come in brown, red, yellow, orange, green, blue and purple – mainly due to varying levels of iron and aluminium oxides. Though under private ownership, the field is open to the public most days with a small admission fee, and has become one of Mauritius' most popular tourist attractions. If the trip here tired you out, no worries – the surrounding village of Chamarel has a perfect climate for coffee production, and tasting tours offer sips from several growers in the area.
