Ama Dablam, Himalayas, Nepal
"Mother's necklace"
Only about 11 kilometres from the summit of Everest, the spire seen here is a common sight for those climbing the world's highest mountain. Ama Dablam's name means "mother's necklace" in Nepali, referring to traditional pendants worn by local Sherpa women – though the mountain's swooping shape is also said to resemble a mother cradling a child. Easily identified by its picture-perfect pyramidal peak, Ama Dablam is one of the great landmarks of Sagarmatha National Park (but topped, of course, by the park's namesake).
Just a snowball's throw from Earth's highest mountain rises what some consider its most beautiful.
