Skógafoss, Iceland
A film-famous fall
Skógafoss plummets over sheer cliffs that long ago marked the land's end in this island country. Over 60 metres high – and about half as wide when flowing its hardest – the massive cascade roars where Iceland's coast once dropped straight off into the ocean. The coastline receded long ago, stranding the glacier-fed fall about 5 kilometres inland. Now it's a popular stop on Iceland's Ring Road, thanks partly to pop culture appearances in 'Game of Thrones' and the 'Thor' franchise.

Though it's receded a way inland, this fearsome fall once spilled straight into the Atlantic Ocean.
