Tossa de Mar, Spain
Beach, boats and boulders
A scraggly, stone-bound pine marks the northeast end of a busy bay in Catalonia, Spain. Tossa de Mar, a community of about 5,500 set on the glamorous Costa Brava, is popular with beachgoers and boaters alike. It's not uncommon to see dozens of sleek watercraft anchored in the bay or beached on the soft sand. On the beach's opposite end, a medieval castle overlooks the seaside, accenting the modern resort town with a touch of history. If that's not far enough back in time for you, Tossa de Mar is also home to Roman ruins dating to the 1st century BCE.
