Arch of Portitxol in L'Escala, Spain
Window to the sea
We're peering through the Arch of Portitxol, a striking rock formation near the historic fishing centre of L'Escala, Spain. Formed by wind and wave erosion, it's a view humans have appreciated since antiquity. Roman ruins not far from here indicate that people were catching and preserving fish from the local Mediterranean waters as long ago as 575 BCE. Today, the arch is a favourite among photographers and travellers exploring the glitzy Costa Brava.
