Punta Ínsua Light in Galicia, Spain
A twilit lighthouse
More than 40 lighthouses, including the Punta Ínsua Light, completed in 1915 and pictured here, guard Galicia's long, serpentine shoreline. Wander the Way of the Lighthouses and you'll eventually reach Cape Finisterre, a headland the ancient Romans thought marked the world's end, which has been the home of an important signal light since 1853. But the end of the world isn't the end of this lighthouse-hopping tour. Drive northeast and you'll find the city of A Coruña, home to the world's oldest standing lighthouse – the 1st-century Tower of Hercules.

This lighthouse is one of many along a historic trail that traverses Galicia's tangled coast.
