Three Peaks of Lavaredo, South Tyrol, Italy
The three watchtowers
The Three Peaks of Lavaredo offer a little something for everybody. Spectacular views for the hikers (and, of course, photographers) who view them from afar, challenging routes for the mountaineers who've been climbing them for 150 years and plenty of history for military buffs. The three Dolomitic pinnacles were used as makeshift watchtowers during World War I, straddling Italy's border with its then-opponent Austria-Hungary. The high-altitude battles of the Italian Alps came to be called the White War due to their intense winter conditions. Remnants of the bitter skirmishes, such as trenches and tunnels, are scattered in the shadows of this timeless mountain trio.

Italian forces watched foes' movements from these three peaks during the bitter "White War".
