Northern gannets in Yorkshire, England
Smitten seabirds
A couple of common murres appear demure as their much bigger neighbours indulge in some PDA. We'll give the lovebirds a pass as their reunion only happens once a year. Though northern gannet mating pairs split up each winter, migrating from the North Atlantic to the Caribbean or Mediterranean, they rekindle their long-distance relationships each spring at their home breeding grounds. Finding each other again and again amongst thousands of fellow gannets, these monogamous birds keep the spark going for life.
The onlooking common murres may find it sappy, but we're suckers for a good gannet love story.
