Mount Everest
Height meets light
Called Sagarmāthā in Nepali and Chomolungma in Tibetan, this mountain's height would make it famous by any name. Of course, Mount Everest's fame has partly turned to notoriety in recent years, as climbers making successful summits can number over 800 a season and images of long queues and garbage-strewn slopes have spread across social media. Even though a ban on expeditions during the COVID-19 pandemic gave the mountain a break, many open questions remain about its future as a sustainable mountaineering destination.
It's every mountaineer's dream to conquer this summit. But is its climbing culture sustainable?
