The moaning and thundering of waves within its Lake Superior-lapped caves may be the origin of the island's name – it's said that the local Ojibwe people once warned of evil spirits haunting the limestone hollows. If that doesn't frighten you off, you can rent a kayak to explore the isle's ins and outs. Or, if you visit in wintertime and the ice is solid enough, you can hike or snowshoe out for a close-up of the massive icicles that form here.
