Corjuem Fort in Goa, India
A former empire's fort
From the beach city of Vasco da Gama to thick inland forest like this, you'll find architectural reminders of Portuguese rule all over this tiny Indian state. And it's not very distant history – in 1961, Goa became the last colony of Portugal to be annexed by India, ending more than 400 years of colonial control. Corjuem Fort was built in 1705 to maintain that control, marking what was then the eastern edge of Portugal's claimed territory. Simply built and low-slung, it lacks the ornate flair of Old Goa's palatial buildings. But even as rainforest overgrowth moves to reclaim it, it stands out as one of the area's best-preserved pieces of military history.
This fort was left here by the Portuguese – the first and last European colonial power in India.
