Embalse Guatapé, Colombia
Peninsular patchwork
Historically a farming village, and since the 1970s a major centre of electric power production for central Columbia, Guatapé is now known more for its scenic beauty. A big reason for that is the Embalse Guatapé, a huge artificial lake created by the construction of a hydroelectric dam. Boats glide over its surface, past islets and peninsulas hosting holiday homes. The lakeside town of Guatapé is just as charming, full of traditionally decorated buildings that display colourful bas-relief baseboards. For sweeping views like the one in our image, people can climb the more than 600 steps to the top of El Peñón de Guatapé, a massive rock formation that sits at the lake's edge.

A large lake, a maze of green peninsulas and a sleepy village washed in bright colours.
