Goðafoss, Iceland
Iceland's Niagara?
Springing from the massive Vatnajökull ice cap, the 177-kilometre Skjálfandafljót River tumbles in torrents down several mighty waterfalls. Arguably the most beautiful of these is Goðafoss – meaning either "waterfall of the gods" or "waterfall of the chieftain". Here, the river plunges in a 30-metre-wide horseshoe into aquamarine waters 12 metres below. When they're gushing, the falls offer a fine aerial view for fallen warriors being swooped to Valhalla – or for well-piloted drone cameras.
The water that thunders over these falls originates from the massive Vatnajökull ice cap.
