Santorini, Greece
Remains of Atlantis?
This Pegasus'-eye view of Santorini, Greece, is one of countless finely detailed images available in the Microsoft Planetary Computer. This vast, cloud-powered database lets scientists see a whole timeline of crisp satellite captures and environmental data for any location in the world. By analysing this data, scientists can explore better ways to manage land and water resources, combat climate change and prepare for natural disasters. These are all hot topics here in Santorini, whose distinct arc shape resulted from a volcanic eruption some 3,600 years ago – a disaster for the Minoan culture that possibly gave us the Atlantis legend.
A volcanic eruption at this Greek locale may have inspired the legend of Atlantis.
